DC Shoes began in 1993 when co-founders Ken BLOCK and Damon WAY approached the challenge of making skateboard shoes with a revolutionary philosophy: skateboarders were athletes, and needed shoes with athletic performance features.
At the time, BLOCK and WAY had owned successful small clothing and snowboard outerwear companies EIGHTBALL, DUB and DROORS CLOTHING, as well as a snowboard lifestyle magazine called BLUNT. BLUNT, considered by some to have shaped modern snowboarding, aligned the sport with skateboarding more than skiing.
DC Shoes' birth became official when Damon's brother, professional skateboarder Danny WAY, and his friend and fellow pro Colin MCKAY agreed to leave their sponsors to represent the emerging shoe company.
Eleven years after it started, the company has grown to $150 million in sales and is distributed throughout the world. DC was also acquired by Quiksilver, Inc., in May 2004, making it part of a $1.6 billion action sports family.
